Abstract

Research was conducted on the impact of Japanese animation in Latin America. It began with a limited presence on our television screens, but over time, people started to take notice and consume it. The broadcasting time gradually increased, leading to a wider variety of series being aired. Japanese animation experienced a surge in popularity, captivating millions and creating fans, known as "otaku" – individuals passionate about these series and the comics associated with them. The term "otaku" originated in Japan in the 80s as the fan base for anime and manga continued to grow. This gave rise to a subculture of the same name, characterized by specific behaviors that initially manifested as gatherings and later evolved into conventions held worldwide, including in Latin America. Manga, with its roots in Japan, bears some resemblance to American comics and has also influenced society. Japanese culture became significant in our continent, and it's worth delving into it as anime and manga become increasingly relevant. These two forms of entertainment are closely intertwined. The global expansion of this genre can be attributed to its influence and the development of various media outlets. Those who are part of this subculture often adopt a new identity with a nickname as enthusiasts.
