Analysis of the impact of the armed conflict on tourism in the Catatumbo region

This study analyzes the impact of armed conflict on the development and promotion of tourism in the Catatumbo region, an area with high biodiversity and cultural richness, but historically affected by the presence of armed groups, illegal economies, and limited institutional presence. These conditions have generated forced displacement, a perception of insecurity, and low tourism investment, preventing the full realization of the region's tourism potential. The methodology was based on a qualitative approach aimed at consolidating existing knowledge about the relationship between armed conflict and tourism. To this end, a review of academic literature was conducted using databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, in addition to institutional reports. The methodological process included five phases: rigorous inquiry, inclusion criteria, quality assessment, replicability, and synthesis. Comparative case studies with other regions affected by conflict and spatial analysis using digital tools were also employed to identify the relationship between the presence of armed actors and potential tourist routes. The results demonstrate that violence and institutional instability limit tourism development, generating negative perceptions of the region and reducing investment opportunities. However, the study identifies alternative tourism development models based on sustainable approaches such as ecotourism, community-based tourism, and heritage tourism, which allow for the transformation of the scars of conflict into opportunities for learning, reconciliation, and local economic development. In conclusion, tourism in the Catatumbo region faces significant challenges stemming from the armed conflict, but it also presents opportunities for peacebuilding and regional economic revitalization. Strengthening security, community participation, infrastructure investment, and the implementation of comprehensive public policies are key factors in promoting a sustainable tourism model that contributes to territorial development and social reconciliation.
