Abstract

Background: The cross-sectional geometry of the weld bead is a determining factor in the quality of arc-welded surfaces. These arc welding processes are used to join materials and repair damaged cavities. However, the lack of a mathematical function that describes the geometric profile of the weld bead makes it difficult to estimate the required distribution of parallel weld beads. This situation creates geometric defects on the welded surface, such as waviness and discontinuities in surface flatness. Objective: To determine the weld bead profile using a mathematical tool to establish the minimum overlap distance between parallel beads. Methods: This study is quantitative, descriptive, and experimentally validated. It was conducted in four phases. First, the weld beads were produced, and experimental data on their geometric shape were collected, ensuring a uniform appearance and no weld spatter. In the second phase, the weld bead profile was established using a digital mathematical tool. In the next phase, the minimum distance between two weld beads was specified based on mathematical functions to obtain weld beads without ripples between them. Finally, weld beads were experimentally tested to verify the spacing by estimating the weld bead profile. Results: The mathematical function that best fits the geometric profile of the weld bead was determined. Furthermore, the function established a minimum percentage distance between two beads to avoid ripples between them. Conclusion: Determining the mathematical profile of the weld bead provided a quantitative basis for determining the correct spacing between beads, favoring the production of surfaces with greater flatness.
