Introduction: The research aims to identify factors that affect the learning of mathematics in
engineering students of the Universidad Francisco de Paula Santander. Materials and methods: The
research is framed in the quantitative paradigm, cross-sectional, explanatory and correlational. The
sample consisted of 142 students of the Faculty of Engineering during the first period of 2022. The
information related to the associated factors was collected through intentional sampling by means
of a virtual survey applied through the institutional platform and the information corresponding
to academic results in the differential calculus course was obtained from the academic information
system, once the semester was over. Conclusion: Factors that influence the learning of mathematics
in engineering students, among others, are the results of the state test in the quantitative
reasoning and critical reading components, the level of education of the student’s parents and
their use of information and communication technologies; other variables that can be considered
determining factors, for the case analyzed in this study, do not constitute a significant contribution.
